PETA Activist Award recipient Maru Vigo deserves our thanks once again, as her efforts to abolish a cruel annual festival—in which a dog is tied to the back of a bucking bull before both are viciously slaughtered—have achieved a victory!

In a letter, Vigo—who had received a few suggestions from PETA President Ingrid Newkirk—wrote to the bishop of the Dioceses of Apurímac describing the barbaric religious ritual that was held in the Apurímac region of central Peru.
The bishop responded wholeheartedly, stating that the festival was an atrocity. He added that he’ll send a priest as his representative to tell all the parishioners and other fellow priests in the region that this kind of celebration will not be held ever again under his watch.
This tradition was an abomination.
According to news sources, every August in the village of Chalhuani, during a festival to celebrate the Virgin Mary, villagers would strap a local dog they believe had “misbehaved” to the back of a bull. The bull was then released into a ring, where both animals were killed in a bullfight.
In a video of the sickening ritual, a dog is heard shrieking in terror and frantically trying to escape. Eventually, the gate opens, and the bull bucks furiously. Music and laughter are heard coming from the malicious crowd.
Thanks to supporters like you, this ritual animal abuse is over.
Once PETA was informed about this sadistic ceremony, an action alert was set up so that everyone could help end this abuse. A strong wave of PETA supporters voiced their outrage to Peruvian officials.
Our victories for animals are yours as well! Together, we can create a better world for everyone.
