If you haven’t yet seen Barbra Streisand’s Netflix concert special Barbra: The Music … The Mem’ries … The Magic!, you’re in for a treat. Filmed last year in Miami, it showcases the legendary songstress’ vocal prowess and incorporates a message of respect for animals in some of the dazzling production numbers.
“Our love for all animals and particularly those we bring into our lives enriches us,” said Streisand in a message e-mailed to PETA. “They bestow the gift of unconditional love and remind us of our capacity to return that.”
Before her soaring rendition of “Pure Imagination,” Streisand explains that when she starts to feel anxious about the many problems facing our planet—climate change, disappearing bees and butterflies, polluted oceans, polar bears whose habitats are melting away, and more—she likes to close her eyes and imagine the world the way she wants it to be. During the song, a giant screen behind her shows beautiful footage of dolphins, elephants, polar bears, butterflies, birds, fish, and other animals in nature.
Streisand’s beloved canine companion, Samantha (“Sammie“), who passed away last May, also plays a prominent role in the special. Always by Streisand’s side during their time together, she’s shown exiting the plane with the singer at the beginning and enjoying time with her during the intermission. The final song, “Closer,” features footage of the two of them, and the end credits dedicate the special to Sammie.
Streisand’s heart for animals is as big as her unforgettable voice. So cuddle up with your animal family members and check out her special tonight.
