Icon Cloris Leachman Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Cloris Leachman doesn’t stop. At 91 years old, she’s an acclaimed Emmy- and Oscar-winning actor and considered a true legend in the entertainment industry. And she’s been vegetarian for more than 50 of those years. She has also teamed up with PETA on just about every animal issue out there.

In an intimate gathering held at the home of Jillian Michaels, American Gods producer Bryan Fuller presented Cloris with PETA’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Also in attendance to honor her work with PETA and enjoy delicious vegan hors d’œuvres, wine, cocktails, and a scrumptious cake (for PETA President Ingrid Newkirk’s birthday!) were celebrity friends and fellow animal advocates Moby and Jennifer Coolidge.

With the following campaigns under her belt, PETA saw to it that Cloris added one more award to her collection of accolades—one for her lifetime of achievement in animal advocacy.

On Elephants Abused in Circuses

Ringling Bros. circus may have finally closed its doors, but for other animal circuses, roadside zoos, and wild-animal exhibitors, including marine parks like SeaWorld and the Miami Seaquarium, it’s time to take note: Eyes have been opened, and society has changed. People know who these animals are and that it’s wrong to capture and exploit them.

On Spaying and Neutering Companion Animals

The single most important thing that we can do to help prevent cats and dogs from suffering and dying because of overpopulation is to spay and neuter them. If you’d like to have a spay/neuter ordinance in your community, please visit PETA’s Action Center for information on getting animal-friendly legislation passed.

On ‘Ag-Gag’ Bills

Eyewitness investigations of farms have been vital in documenting abuse and punishing those responsible. But “ag-gag” laws prevent eyewitness investigators and whistleblowers from documenting and exposing abuse as systemic, routine, and inherent in the animal agriculture industry—not just isolated incidents that occurred on a single day.

On Not Eating Animals

Do your part for your health, the planet, and animals. It’s never too early (or late) to make the kind, smart choice to follow a plant-based diet, giving your health a boost and sparing animals unnecessary suffering.

On Orcas Imprisoned at SeaWorld

It’s unacceptable for humans to imprison animals, deprive them of the chance to establish and explore their natural territory, and watch them go insane from frustration and loneliness. SeaWorld has taken a step forward by ending its orca-breeding program, but more changes must follow.
