February 23 is National Dog Biscuit Day, and we’re all about celebrating a holiday that involves doting on our canine companions. But if you’ve ever read the ingredient list on dog biscuits and treats that are sold in stores, you know that what goes into many of them isn’t so savory. Many are made with meat industry byproducts. In addition, there are other ingredients that just aren’t good for dogs (or anyone else!), such as corn syrup, sugar, and food dyes.
But thankfully, it’s easy to treat our best buddies—and treat them right—by whipping up a batch of homemade, healthy vegan dog biscuits. These can be so tasty that you might even be tempted to lick the spoon—if your dog doesn’t get to it first!

2 Tbsp. pitted and finely chopped dates

- In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, oatmeal, and baking powder. Make a well in the center.
- Place the carrots and dates in a separate bowl with the peanut butter and water.
- Add the peanut butter mix to the well in the flour mix and stir until combined.
- Flatten the dough on a lightly floured surface until it is approximately 1/4-inch thick. Use a cookie cutter to cut the treats.

Easy Vegan Peanut Butter–Pumpkin Dog Treats
2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 cup pumpkin purée (be sure to use real pumpkin, not the pie filler)
1/4 cup unsalted and unsweetened peanut butter
1/4 cup water
- Preheat the oven to 350ºF.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and ground cinnamon.
- Mix in the pumpkin and peanut butter, then slowly add the water. If the dough is too sticky, add a bit more flour. If it’s too dry, add a small amount of water.
- Roll the dough out to 1/4-inch thickness on a lightly floured surface and use a knife or cookie cutter to cut out whatever treat shapes you desire.
- Place the treats 1/2 inch apart on a nonstick baking pan or a baking pan lined with parchment paper.
- Bake for 20 minutes.
- Let the treats cool and then let your dog have a taste!
Makes approximately 25 treats
