Consumers Talk, Companies Listen

I’m honored to work with many talented people, but just wait until you see the PETA Foundation’s wildlife veterinarian, Dr. Heather Rally, in her riveting new video in the PETA Reveals series. Be prepared to be wowed.

Dr. Rally has dedicated her life to making a difference for animals. In her work with the foundation, she’s been involved in numerous cases that entailed many elements: documentation, negotiation, compromise, and much more. But as you’ll hear her reflect on, what stands out for her is the disconnect that so many companies have with the suppliers who provide them with the materials needed to make the merchandise they sell.

As Dr. Rally says, corporate honchos don’t often visit factories or have any real notion about the process behind making a final product. If company executives have no idea what’s going on—like angora rabbits shrieking in pain as their fur is ripped out of their bodies—it’s up to informed consumers to let them know. With the peak shopping season fast approaching, it’s a perfect time to do just that!

Now, more than ever, you hold the power to influence how companies operate. Unlike the old model, in which the product directed the consumer, today’s empowered consumer is increasingly shaping the product. The clout of united voices and buying trends is real. Social networking allows for instant global communication. An issue doesn’t have to go viral to have an impact—but when one does, the reaction can be swift and powerful. Companies that believe otherwise do so at their own peril.

Embrace your role as a game changer for animals this holiday season. Call a company’s toll-free phone number to voice your opinion. Fire off e-mails and letters to the editor. Use your Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram accounts to spread the word about the issues that are important to you and to animals. Shun fur, leather, and wool. Buy products that haven’t been tested on animals.

Consumer power is your superpower, one that truly helps animals. Sign up for PETA’s Action Team to receive updates on ways you can use your power to help animals this holiday season and in the coming year.
