A Green New Way to Prevent ArthritisNot only is broccoli President Barack Obama’s favorite food, it also may be a powerful arthritis fighter, according to new findings from the U.K. This is because of a substance in broccoli called sulforaphane, which researchers believe can stop or slow down cartilage destruction caused by osteoarthritis. (Sulforaphane is also found in broccoli’s cousins, Brussels sprouts and cabbage.) The same compound may also help protect us against breast, bladder, and prostate cancer, according to previous studies.

This is just the latest addition to the long list of broccoli’s benefits for our bodies. Broccoli is also packed with lutein and zeaxanthin—two carotenoids that help keep our eyes sharp—as well as calcium, protein, vitamin C, fiber, and other nutrients. It helps rid our bodies of toxins, fights inflammation, and more. And it does all this while tasting great. They don’t call it a super-food for nothing!

In addition to enjoying broccoli, we can also help ease osteoarthritis symptoms and keep the disease from progressing by exercising and maintaining a healthy weight—another great reason to make sure that we get out and hit the sidewalk with our pups every day.
