These Vegan Personal-Care Products Are Good Enough to Eat

You’ve heard of “farm to table,” but you probably haven’t heard of “farm to face.” That’s because Grigore Madikians, founder of the Los Angeles–based unisex beauty company Gaffer&Child, coined the term to describe his philosophy. He’s so passionate about using only the highest-quality sustainable, environmentally friendly, and locally sourced ingredients that his collection of skin- and hair-care products is literally good enough to eat.

“Every step of our process is about delivering the best product, both for the customer and the earth,” Madikians told Fashionista in a recent interview. “We buy ingredients from local farmers, process raw ingredients on-site and handcraft every unit in America.”

A PETA Business Friend that donates a portion of its sales to PETA, Gaffer&Child puts its money where its mouth—and your face—is. With a company mantra of “Give a Damn,” its products are vegan, cruelty-free, organic, fair trade, non-GMO, 96 percent locally sourced, and free of synthetics, petroleum, and artificial dyes. “When we need an ingredient that isn’t available locally, like argan oil, we visit the farms we’ll be working with to ensure ingredients are never chemically treated and are harvested by workers earning fair wages in good conditions,” says Madikians.

Nearly as much thought goes into the packaging as into the product: Glass is used because of its beauty and its ability to preserve the integrity of the ingredients, along with being recyclable and reusable. Madikians is currently looking into setting up a system to offer customers a rebate for returning empty bottles.

Gaffer&Child’s handcrafted collection includes a facial scrub, facial cleanser, hydrating serum, shaving butter, and hair pomade, all made with quality ingredients like lavender extract, peppermint oil, jojoba oil, shea butter, and green-tea extract. More offerings, including hair-styling products and lip balm, are in the works. The products are available at GafferandChild.com or at Amazon.com.
