The coronavirus has presented us with many challenges. Going hungry should not be one of them.
In recent months, many people have lost work, and we are all concerned about our health. For this very reason, PETA teamed up with PETA Business Friend Plant Based Foods Inc. to make a tasty donation of delicious vegan meals to a hunger relief program in New York.
We all know there’s nothing more comforting than a warm meal, especially when it consists of flavorsome dishes just like Mama used to make! PETA’s gift – generously donated by Plant Based Foods Inc. – tagliatelle with mushrooms, vegan ravioli with tomato and basil, and panzerotti with spinach and dairy-free cheddar. Meal boxes also included an assortment of gourmet vegan cheeses, made from sprouted brown rice.
Around 900 people received a box of these goodies from Huntington Food Share, which is operated by Community Solidarity, the nation’s largest vegetarian food relief program. Patrons also received a box of fresh produce and a PETA vegan starter kit, which contains easy, affordable, and healthy recipes. Surplus meals were distributed to “free fridges” in New York City and other food banks in Long Island.
As we battle through a pandemic that many experts believe originated in a live animal market, it is urgent that we reject industries where scores of stressed and sick animals are confined in close proximity, breeding grounds for dangerous diseases. We can avoid a repeat of COVID-19 by eating vegan foods, which also save us about $23 per week on our grocery bill—a huge relief for those of us struggling with finances.
Every person who transitions to tasty, vegan foods spares nearly 200 thinking, feeling animals every year. It is easy to find flavorsome vegan cheeses made from rice, nuts, and other plants, and which do not involve forcibly impregnating cows, tearing calves from their caring mothers, and killing animals when their bodies stop producing large volumes of milk.
Those of us who eat vegan may have observed the benefits of foods low in saturated fat and free of cholesterol. Eating vegan reduces our risk of strokes, obesity, cancer, and heart disease—comorbidities that may put us at higher risk of severe illness if we contract COVID-19. By sharing delicious vegan foods with people far and wide, this initiative truly “fed two birds with one scone.” As PETA President Ingrid Newkirk stated, “It’ll help feed people who are struggling and show how delicious vegan meals can be.”
Compassionate initiatives at such scale cannot happen without support from dedicated, caring companies like Plant Based Foods Inc, a much-valued PETA Business Friend. If you run a compassionate company and would like to assist in PETA’s groundbreaking work to help animals, visit the link below.
