PETA president Ingrid E. Newkirk’s, recently brought her talk “Animalkind” tour based on her new book, Animalkind: Remarkable Discoveries About Animals and Revolutionary New Ways to Show Them Compassion to San Diego and Las Vegas. “Animalkind is an inspiring talk where Newkirk presents fascinating evidence of animals’ intelligence, awareness, and emotions.

In San Diego, Ingrid had the privilege of presenting vegan food educator extraordinaire Elizabeth Gary with a Compassionate Activist Award.

Liz deserves the award for her outstanding efforts to teach people of all ages about vegan living. She frequently hosts free vegan cooking classes at libraries around San Diego. Since libraries typically have funding which can be used for vegan food education, Liz is working on a book that will help others take advantage of this opportunity, as well as the many other ways to teach people about vegan food.

Liz also works with high school clubs around the city to help students organize vegan events and create vegan cookbooks. Last year, with help from TeachKind, PETA’s humane education division, Liz organized a vegan food and fashion show at a San Diego high school. And if all this wasn’t enough, Liz also shares vegan recipes with her local supermarket, which will hopefully offer even more vegan dishes in the prepared foods section in the future.

In Las Vegas, Craig Morganson, a member of PETA’s Augustus Club and Leadership Council, as well as our PETA Business Friends program through his company, Humane Travel, which co-sponsored the event, introduced Ingrid.

The evening at both events concluded with an extra-special sweet treat from Baskin-Robins.  The company recently added two new vegan ice cream flavors to its menu after meeting with PETA, with more to come!  The new ice cream flavors, Chocolate Extreme and Coffee Caramel Chunk, got rave reviews from all and made for a sweet finale to the evening.
