Black-Owned Businesses You’ll Want to Support This Black History Month and Beyond

In celebration of Black History Month, we’re sharing information about some of our favorite Black-owned businesses that are making the world a better place for animals through their ethical products and their support for PETA. Each of these ethical businesses is a PETA Business Friend and donates a portion of its sales annually to help us help animals. All of them are committed to ending speciesism and all other “isms,” one extremely satisfied customer at a time.

Mixed Chicks

The world is becoming more and more diverse, and Mixed Chicks is here to support the changing times. Whether you’re Black, white, Asian, Latine, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, or any glorious combination, you’ll love the way these nonsticky, lightweight hair products define and moisturize your locks. Founders and proud “mixed chicks” Wendi Levy Kaaya and Kim Etheredge have made it easy to search by your unique hair type or take the Curl Quiz to find customized hair solutions that will let you look good, feel good, and do good.

Maya’s Cookies

Maya Madsen founded Maya’s Cookies in 2015, and it has since become “America’s #1 Black-Owned Gourmet Vegan Cookie Company.” The company offers a wide variety of sinfully delicious soft-baked creations guaranteed to have your friends asking, “Are you sure this is vegan?” Every flavor has its own story grounded in Maya’s experiences, and each one can be delivered anywhere in the U.S. In addition to PETA, Maya’s Cookies supports organizations that focus on empowering young people and uplifting underserved communities.

Boycemode

It’s not always possible to prepare great-tasting, nourishing meals for you family when life gets too busy. Enter Boycemode, a vegan meal delivery service focused on holistic health and complete nutrition. Founder Sam Boyce says, “Seven years ago I was a type two diabetic, I had hypertension, high blood pressure and I was 160 pounds overweight. My doctor confirmed that my life would be cut short if I didn’t make immediate changes.” Boyce found healing and wholeness by changing what he was putting into his body, and he set out on a mission to help others do the same. With plans starting at just $35 per week, you can have savory selections like Bruschetta Roasted Garlic Pasta and Buffalo Meatball Subs arrive at your door.

ATLAS MONROE

Would you like to try the vegan chicken dish that beat out recipes using real birds to be named the “Best Fried Chicken Dish” by TIME magazine’s Extra Crispy? This “chicken” had Shark Tank’s Lori Greiner calling it “extremely tasty” and Barbara Corcoran declaring, “You fooled me.” Its list of accolades also includes winning VegNews’ #1 Best Vegan Chicken Sandwich four years running! You can try all these delicious dishes by going to ATLAS MONROE and ordering some of founder Deborah Torres’ Extra Crispy Chick’n Strips, Garlic Parmesan Popcorn Chick’n, Deep Fried N’ Stuffed Turkey, Apple Wood Fired Ribs, Loaded Mac N Cheeze, and more. We couldn’t sum up these drool-worthy creations any better than Torres herself: “an exceptional, tastier, and ultimately better way of life.”
