5 Ways PETA Is Helping Animals in Laboratories This Week

  1. Another big win in Taiwan! After discussions with PETA and our friends at Kindness to Animals, Taiwan’s third-largest health food company (and the maker of the country’s bestselling brand of sports drink), Vitalon Foods Company, is banning all animal tests that aren’t explicitly required by law.
  2. Armed with a slew of damning federal reports, we’re now calling for the resignation of National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Francis Collins. On his watch, NIH laboratories have racked up 34 cases of serious animal welfare violations in just 15 months—including for an incident in which a mouse literally burst into flames and another in which a monkey asphyxiated while under anesthesia.
  3. PETA is calling out more of Texas A&M University’s deceptions. The school’s lead canine muscular dystrophy (MD) experimenter publicly stated that healthy dogs are released for adoption, yet nine of them were quietly transferred to another laboratory. A state legislator who called Texas A&M was apparently told that all the dogs still imprisoned at the university must remain there for round-the-clock veterinary care—but only seven of the 19 survivors are afflicted with canine MD. In the face of these lies, we’re ramping up our call for all the dogs to be freed from the school’s barren cages and actually given a chance at adoption.
  4. Nineteen U.S. military service members have joined PETA in appealing to the Department of Defense to demand an end to the use of live animals in Cobra Gold training drills in Thailand.
  5. Our Instagram video revealing the gruesome meanings behind experimenters’ euphemisms has garnered more than 150,000 views and over 2,000 comments condemning the “Devil’s Dictionary.”
