Bid on This Painting and Help Animals!

PETA is auctioning off the iconic painting “The Bullfighter Dies” by provocative artist Rubber Larry in Bonhams’ upcoming “Pop Culture: Then & Now” online auction. Bidding will run from December 5 to 15.

Artist Rubber Larry, aka “Larry Torro,” donated this painting, which was created in 2011 with the initial title “El Bull-a-dor,” to PETA. It depicts a bullfighter’s final moments at the hands of a bull and has become one of the world’s most iconic animal rights artworks. The image was taken down from social media sites several times before it went viral, garnering tens of millions of hits globally. It has since spawned countless tattoos, prints, and articles of clothing, thanks to PETA and singer Morrissey, who projected it on a jumbo screen as he performed his protest song “The Bullfighter Dies,” inspired by the painting, to kick off his 2014 world tour.

Rubber Larry’s love of animals has led him to produce eye-catching works of art in which animals take revenge for the abuse they’ve endured at the hands of humans. Although he originally intended “El Bull-a-dor” to be used during a protest at a bullfight, on reflection he realized that it might not have ended well for the painting or the protester.

He ended up keeping it, though, and then photographed it and shared it with the world. In 2015, Larry changed its title to “The Bullfighter Dies” in honor of Morrissey. In a written statement, Larry wrote, “This would not be the iconic piece that it is, if it weren’t for PETA’s tenacity and unstoppable passion and compassion. They are relentless and fight like hell for the wellbeing of animals. It was PETA who brought Morrissey and the painting together and it was Morrissey who made it indelible by marrying it with beautiful music.” Morrissey and animal rights art? What could be cooler?

“For more than a decade, Rubber Larry’s iconic painting has encouraged viewers to see a bullfight from the victim’s perspective and consider how it would feel to be lanced, stabbed, and killed in front of a screaming crowd,” says PETA Foundation Senior Vice President Steve Kehrli. “PETA and animals are lucky to have Larry’s tremendous talent and generous support on our side.”

All the proceeds from the auction will support PETA’s lifesaving work. The donation of “The Death of a Bullfighter” is an invaluable contribution to animal rights, so please encourage the art lover in your life to take the opportunity to help animals by bidding on it.
