The holiday season is a special time of year that’s filled with loved ones, celebrations, and kindness. And somehow, it’s already here! So to help you get into the spirit and enjoy some cruelty-free fun, the winners of PETA Prime’s Sexiest Vegan Over 50 contest shared some of their favorite holiday traditions.
Winner Erin Riley-Carrasco, a 53-year-old dancer and mother, has been an animal rights advocate since she was a teenager, and it shows. When PETA Prime asked her what she wants for Christmas, her answer proved just how motivated and compassionate vegans are:
I would love everyone in the world to watch What the Health, Forks Over Knives, and Earthlings. I believe that if everyone truly took the time to see and hear the truth about the intense suffering animals endure in factory farming, most ethical people would go vegan! That is my Christmas wish and my hope for humanity. That is the only way we can save our planet, end world hunger, stop global warming and stop the killing of 100 billion animals every year. We need to do a better job and be better stewards of our planet and all its inhabitants/earthlings!
Erin’s favorite part of the holiday season is cooking vegan food for her friends and family and showing them how easy it is to veganize recipes without compromising on taste. In fact, her animal-friendly holiday fare—including her famous mashed potatoes and mushroom gravy—is so delectable that it’s inspired some of her friends to go vegan. “Once they’ve become enlightened and educated about how harmful most animal products are to the body, they become excited about learning all the different ingredients and recipes to prepare healthy, compassionate meals.” Spoken like a true winner.
Erin’s holiday doesn’t skimp on flavor or fun. Every year, her family sings “The 12 Days of Christmas” while holding wine glasses that have the 12 different animals from the song etched on them. Family members must sing the part that corresponds to the day that they have and are encouraged to act out or dance their parts. That’s what PETA calls animal-friendly fun!
For PETA Prime’s Sexiest Vegan Over 50 Doug Schmidt, the holidays are all about family, including animals. “My family over the years have made more and more changes in their own lives to be cruelty-free like me and my wife. Sitting down at the table enjoying the meal [and] knowing as a family [that] we walk a bit gentler on the Earth makes my heart swell.” Now our hearts are swelling, Doug.
What he refers to as a “meal” is more like a feast fit for a vegan king. Some of his favorite holiday dishes include OMG Cheeseless Cheesecake, roasted root vegetables, and French Almond Pear Tart. Uh, you might need to set one more place at your table this year, Doug. And speaking of tables, his family has the ultimate centerpiece: Every year, they adopt a turkey from Farm Sanctuary and make the adoption card the focal point of their table.
It’s easy to see why Erin and Doug won PETA Prime’s Sexiest Vegan Over 50 contest and prize—an unforgettable cruise, courtesy of Holistic Holiday at Sea. Doug told PETA Prime the following:
My wife and I are so looking forward to the cruise. We have always wanted to attend the Holistic Holiday at Sea. They always have the most interesting speakers. To spend time on a cruise not just soaking up the sun, but learning from the leaders in the field of holistic medicine, [i]t just doesn’t get any better than that.
