‘Sexiest Vegan Over 50’ Winner Dr. Joel Kahn Pens ‘Dead Execs Don’t Get Bonuse$’

The title of Dr. Joel Kahn’s Dead Execs Don’t Get Bonuse$: The Ultimate Guide to Surviving Your Career With a Healthy Heart may be clever, but the book is about a very serious subject: cardiovascular disease, a killer responsible for one of every four deaths in the United States. Dr. Kahn, a cardiologist and one of PETA Prime’s Sexiest Vegan Over 50 contest winners for 2016, reminds readers that up to 90 percent of heart attacks can be prevented by following commonsense habits such as not smoking; eating healthy vegan foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; exercising; getting enough sleep; and managing stress.

Dead Execs Don’t Get Bonuse$ focuses on early detection and prevention and can help motivate you to “bulletproof” your own heart. The book profiles businesspeople who had access to the best medical care to make an important point: If you don’t have time for preventive medical tests, you don’t have time to neglect your heart.

While the subject matter is somber at times, the book has a lifesaving message. Dr. Kahn holds readers’ attention by sharing stories about executives who unexpectedly died from heart attacks, leaving their families, friends, and colleagues in distress, as well as inspiring tales about individuals who turned their lives around before it was too late.

I recommend the book to anyone—executive or not—who wants to enjoy a long, healthy life, free of heart problems. I’ve been vegan for more than 25 years—ever since I learned how animals are abused by the meat, egg, and dairy industries—but even I could benefit by eating more produce and fewer processed meals. Since reading the book, I’ve been eager to explore more ways in which I can get active, as I’m in a wheelchair because of a genetic condition and am unable to go for a daily walk, as recommended. Perhaps it’s time to revisit walking short distances while holding onto my treadmill or swimming more when it’s warm.

How about you? Read the book, and then let us know what changes you’re going to make to “bulletproof your heart.”
