Book Review: ‘Foster: Saving the World One Pooch at a Time’

First, a confession: Maureen “Mo” Flaherty, author of the wonderful Foster: Saving the World One Pooch at a Time, is my neighbor, and I have spent many happy hours sitting on a blanket in her front yard, helping her socialize puppies. For very young puppies, “socializing” basically means holding and kissing them—so this review might have been written under the influence of puppy breath!

Flaherty has fostered more than 200 dogs and shares her wealth of experience over the course of 150 full-color pages. She offers helpful instruction on everything from choosing a rescue to work with to dog-proofing a room. She also imparts wise guidance on how to let go when a foster dog is adopted and how to avoid compassion fatigue, among other topics.

Want to help but can’t foster? This book has got you covered with a “10 Other Ways You Can Help” section. Industry experts also contribute essential information, and adoption stories written from the perspective of both dogs and human guardians will warm your heart.
