Your Dog Would Like You to Read This, Please …

As a longtime PETA supporter and cofounder of Adopt-a-Pet.com, Amy Luwis is probably one of the most enthusiastic animal advocates you’re likely to meet. This author, cartoonist, and activist puts her words and edgy artistic talents into action for animals, and she’s created cartoons for PETA, the Doris Day Animal Foundation, and others. It’s safe to say that we need more talented and dedicated humans like Amy.

While her efforts have centered on helping animals in shelters, her latest endeavor focuses on keeping dogs safe once they finally find a loving “forever home.” This is the goal behind her recently released book, For Dog’s Sake! A Simple Guide to Protecting Your Pup From Unsafe Foods, Everyday Dangers, and Bad Situations.

This clever dog-safety book—which PETA President Ingrid Newkirk says “should be dog-eared even before the adoption papers are signed”—is loaded with invaluable information that is enhanced and clarified by Amy’s cute and colorful illustrations.

Even the most diligent dog parents can unknowingly cause harm to their pups, simply because they’re unaware of and unprepared for doggie dangers—from toxic foods and common choking hazards to outdoor threats such as foxtails and wild mushrooms. Dog guardians will learn to recognize the characteristics of healthy poo (you better believe there’s such a thing) as well as how to perform the Heimlich maneuver on a choking dog and stop a bleeding wound.

“I’ve always wanted a diagram to evaluate Zelda’s poo, and now I’ve got it. And although I hope we’ll never use it, I now feel very well-versed in the doggy Heimlich maneuver. This book rules.”

While Amy’s book is filled with vet-verified facts, they’re always accompanied by her eye-catching, humorous illustrations. For Amy, cartooning is not just a way to make the reader laugh but also an effective means of sending a powerful message. Throughout For Dog’s Sake!, Amy includes subtle but firm messages about the cruelty of dog crates and the harmful effects of pesticides and poisons.

Whether you’re a dog parent, a veterinarian, a dog-sitter, or just a big fan of dogs, Amy’s book will give you and the pup in your life invaluable knowledge and peace of mind.
