Do Vegans Live Longer?

Researchers at Loma Linda University in California have been conducting a study to determine whether vegetarians and vegans live longer than the rest of the population, and so far, the answer seems to be a resounding “Yes!”

Although the research—which originally began in 1958 and includes various studies on Seventh-day Adventists, who typically eat a plant-based diet as part of their religious beliefs—is only halfway finished, the results suggest that, on average, vegetarian men and women live 9.5 and 6.1 years longer, respectively, than their meat-eating counterparts.

The study also indicates that, in general, vegans are 30 pounds leaner—and five units lighter in terms of body mass index—and that vegetarians and vegans are less insulin resistant than meat-eaters.

Although many Seventh-day Adventists don’t drink, smoke, or consume caffeine, it’s obvious from the initial results that their food choices also play a role in their life expectancy—and their quality of life. Many other scientific studies have shown that vegans are less likely to suffer from chronic illnesses, so it shouldn’t come as any surprise that vegans tend to live longer. A 2012 Harvard School of Public Health study, for example, found that people who eat red and processed meats are much more likely to die from heart disease, diabetes, or cancer. Study participants who ate nuts or other plant-based foods instead of meat had a significantly lower risk of dying young.

Think about it: Vegan foods are cholesterol-free, generally low in saturated fat, and high in fiber, complex carbohydrates, and other essential nutrients. They’re often packed with protein and cancer-fighting phytochemicals, and vegans can easily obtain all the vitamins (including vitamins B12 and D) and minerals (including calcium and iron) that they need.

Meat, eggs, and dairy products, on the other hand, are high in artery-clogging cholesterol, saturated fat, and calories. They don’t contain fiber or various vitamins, and the hormones, toxins, and antibiotics that are often found in animal-based food have been linked to a litany of health problems.

Who do you think will have a better chance of living longer?

The vegans, of course! And the more people there are who eat vegan foods, the fewer animals there will be who are raised in filthy, crowded factory farms and killed in terrifying, blood-soaked slaughterhouses. It’s a win-win situation.

    I am a vegan. But over the years, I have slipped in and out of veganism. I have always been healthy and fit; but never more so than when I am a vegan. When I eat a vegan diet, my body feels “clean.”

    5 years ago, I was diagnosed with Hepatitis C positive. It was estimated I had had hep c for over 30 years. I was symptom free, and it was only found out by accident. I chose to have treatment with drugs that were very toxic. I took these drugs for 48 weeks. The treatment was unsuccessful. Two new drugs were licenced in 2011. Like a fool, I decided to try one of the new drugs, which I took in combination with the older drugs. The treatment was for a further 48 weeks. After 12 weeks with the triple therapy, I became so ill, I thought I was going to die; so I stopped treatment. 5 weeks later, I am just about beginning to regain some of the energy which was depleted by these toxic drugs. I was also anaemic; red and white blood cell count was abnormal; plus many other complications.

    I am so pleased how my vegan diet combined with natural remedies, like milk thistle, liquorice root, B complex supplements etc. are clearing these toxins from my system. One in particular of these toxic drugs takes about 6 months to clear the body.

    Go natural, be a vegan! Live longer! Rely on natural remedies wherever possible.

    Yea, go vegan. I also found out that I had Hep C and have had it for a long time. went on a very un strict vegan type diet, droped 15 or 20 pounds and reversed liver damage that’s right reversed it. and I guess I could mention that the new Hep C drugs work really well take half the time and, and here’s the bad news , they are twice as.expensive.

    I have studied longevity and nutrition for about 35 years and have concluded that a plant-based diet is best. I have looked at research from various parts of the world and written about 40 papers and books on these topics for medical, nutritional and scientific journals. See http://www.humanbodysize.com

    My conclusions are summarized below:

    1. Most areas famous for their longevity and high percentage of centenarians follow a plant-based diet. (However, they also eat some animal products occasionally as well)

    2. Researchers, such as Chan, Suzuki and Yamamoto, studied Okinawan centenarians and concluded that being lean, short and eating a low protein and fat diet improves your chances of reaching 100 years.

    3. Protein consumption has a number of potentially harmful effects. These include:

    Protein creates many waste products vs. carbs and fats, such as ammonia, urea, uric acid, hippuric acid, and creatinine

    Protein promotes undesirable increases in Apo B and homocysteine but lowers beneficial sex hormone binding globulin

    Protein creates undesirable increases in free radicals compared to equal calorie levels of carbs and fats (Lopez-Torres)

    Protein increases insulin and insulin-like growth factor-1. An increase in the levels of these two factors is accepted by many scientists as reducing longevity (Bartke; Maier).

    An equal number of protein calories has a greater impact on increasing obesity than an equal number of calories from carbs and fats (Trichopoulou)

    A high protein diet in infancy or early childhood promotes childhood or adult obesity (Amador, Kimm, Parsons)

    Animal products promote chronic diseases according to Colin Campbell and other nutritional experts. They prefer non-animal sources of protein. Campbell recommends 10-12% of our daily intake should be protein calories.

    Certainly, our bodies need protein but many experts think we are getting too much. They generally recommend 0.8 gram/kilogram of body weight. A kilogram equals 2.2 lbs. Of course, individuals who have a high muscle to fat ratio need more protein for the same body weight as an average US citizen.

    Just 4 weeks ago, I had it up to my eyeballs with pain and fibromyalgia, I couldn’t sleep even bad anymore, it was beyond. I’m 41 and I’ve had it since I was 12/13. Then I decided to go on a juice fast as I noticed it seemed to help so many people with so many problems… after just 5 days I pain free! Now 25 days later, not only am I pain free, but I sleep like a log, I can sit on the couch and get up without having to scream “Ouch!”. I feel like a feather compared to just a few weeks ago. I’m still shocked and confused as to why doctors don’t promote going Vegan for curing so many problems. As for me, I’ve never loved food so much as now, although I’m still juice fasting, I will choose a plant based diet and my partner has already started being Vegan. I can’t believe I’ve not found Veganism 20 years ago. I was Vegetarian for 6 years, but once you inform yourself about the diets, I actually find that vegetarians are going in the right direction, but still need help. I started for my health, for me… and it worked… I constantly said I’m not doing this for the animals… but people, I was wrong! 58 Billion animals killed every year, 58 Billion… for what? So you can eat a burger… It’s insane and once you know the facts there is no turning back! I don’t personally know if I will live longer, but one thing I do know is, I will live healthier, with less pain, less problems, more happier and I will die knowing that I made the change. I stopped supporting and didn’t take part in this massacre that 98% of the people don’t understand that they are participating in. Go Vegan, stay Vegan and spread the word! And be like me and juice yourself happy!!!
