Bob Barker Takes to Airwaves to Save Lucy

In a hard-hitting interview with Canada's CTV network, the ever-eloquent Bob Barker blasts the Edmonton Valley Zoo and city officials for refusing to transfer Lucy, the zoo's ailing and aging elephant, to a sanctuary. Lucy will spend most of the next six frigid Alberta months alone inside a barren barn with nothing to do but sway and dream of the life that she was meant to have.

Bob, pulling no punches, calls Lucy's living conditions "really just one of the worst cases that I know of" and says that he is "appalled at the misery that Lucy has suffered there in Edmonton at the Valley Zoo." Watch here to see Bob take Edmonton and zoo officials to task.

Both Bob and former NHL powerhouse Georges Laraque have offered to make a $100,000 donation to the city to get the transfer underway, and earlier this year, comedian Steve-O led a PETA protest outside the zoo. Canadian William Shatner appealed directly to the mayor to do the right thing for Lucy. But so far, officials have refused to budge.

We're pushing full speed ahead to get Lucy's case heard in Canada's Supreme Court, but in the meantime, please e-mail polite notes to Edmonton's mayor and city council and beg them to move Lucy before winter sets in.

It would be more constructive if you prepared an email that signers could just click to submit (a la Change.org does). it's more difficult doing this process while on a cell phone. just a thought.

    Tariq,

Comments in your own words are often more appreciated and acted upon by those targeted in alerts, but thanks for your suggestion.

Being from Edmonton, I clicked on this story. Just sent off an email and hope many other do the same. I made it short and politely asked they make the right decision.

Dear Edmonton Mayor and City Council Members, Please let Lucy retire to a sanctuary, especially in light of the cold temperatures about to come. Lucy was not born to be in the cold, and she has given her life to your community. Please let her retire in comfort and peace. Thank you.

Please show compassion for Lucy and do the right thing by moving her to a sanctuary where she can live out her life in peace and comfort. Don' t let her suffer through winter. It's heartbreaking to even think about.

Being Canadian I know how cold the environment can be. It is immoral and unfair for an animal whose nature cannot tolerate cold to make them endure this against their will.

It's all about the money – how much they can make off Lucy – not her well-being or happiness – dirty rotten animal abusers!

Here's the letter I sent to the mayor and city council of Edmonton:

"We are all citizens of the 21st century. But, the treatment of the Elephant Lucy is so very 19th century.
Is this really the image that Edmonton wants to project to the world?
When thinking people see an ailing animal in a barren cage do you really think they will come away from that experience with positive feelings towards your zoo, and your city? If the Elephant dies will this not be a scandal?
It’s time to let Lucy go. Send her to a sanctuary where she can be cared for. Let her go with thanks for her service to the city. Do the right thing. Your city will gain more than it will ever lose in good will.
Thank you for considering my opinion."

To the Edmonton Valley Zoo and city officials. What reasonable explanation is there for keeping an elderly elephant in her current living conditions? Do you want to appear uncaring and lacking in compassion or is that the way the zoo really is? Surely you realize that's not good publicity…for the zoo or your city. I certainly wouldn't pay to see animals being treated so poorly. For that matter, I wouldn't choose to spend tourism dollars in your city, period. In a world with little empathy for wildlife and wilderness, please do the right thing.
