Best of PETA Prime: Help Shut Down the Chinese Fur Trade

Posted by at 7:20 AM | Permalink | Comments (97)

Help Shut Down the Chinese Fur Trade by Steve MartindaleCats, dogs, raccoon dogs, rabbits, and other animals are skinned alive in China for their fur. This fur is exported to consumers in the U.S. and abroad and often dyed to look like the fur of other animals. It’s sometimes even deliberately mislabeled as synthetic! More than half the fur garments sold in the U.S. are imported from China, where more than 2 million cats and hundreds of thousands of dogs each year suffer through a miserable life and an excruciatingly painful death as victims of the fur trade. While other sources of fur are unconscionably cruel as well, few do as much as the slaughter of dogs and cats to shake consumers out of complacency.

The cultural and economic inertia driving the Chinese fur trade is daunting—but with your help, we can slow down this juggernaut through dedicated efforts to educate consumers about the true price of fur. We do see glimmers of hope, and you and I can take action right now in many ways.

The quickest way to dismantle the fur trade is to start with your own habits. Take the pledge to stop buying fur, and encourage your friends and family to do the same. Most people aren’t heartless—they do care about others and want to do the right thing. But many simply don’t know about the cruelty behind the fur trim on their coats or gloves, and many are misled by false labeling and fairy tales about fur farms. So for starters, let’s reveal the ugly truth so that people can make an informed decision on what to buy and what to avoid. Send your friends and family the video so that they can see the truth about fur farms for themselves.

When you stop, make sure you stop! Fake fur is fabulous and widely available, but sometimes it’s hard to distinguish from the real stuff, and as mentioned above, it is often deliberately mislabeled. How do you tell the difference? What works for me is looking closely at the substrate material: Is it leathery and skin-like (real) or woven like a rug (fake)? The flame test also works well for me (but don’t try this in stores). Take a few strands of the furry fibers off the garment and hold them over a small flame. Real fur smells like burning hair and leaves a strand of, well, burnt hair. But the most common synthetics smell like burning plastic and melt into a bead as plastic does.

Next, you can help our fight to alleviate the pain and suffering of animals on Chinese fur farms by using any of the arsenal of tools we have available to reach out to people:

  • Share PETA’s campaign Facebook fan page with all your friends. Ask them to join the fan page and to share the truth with their online social circle!
  • Help end the torment and suffering of these animals by making a donation today.

I know that we can do it if we all join together. There are already glimmers of hope: Where I live, I never see people wearing full fur coats anymore. Trim, yes, but not full coats. A growing number of department stores have gone fur-free, thanks to PETA. Nike, JCPenney, Urban Outfitters, Polo Ralph Lauren, Gap, Forever 21, and dozens of others no longer support the cruel fur industry.

Many fashion designers—including Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein-also no longer use fur in any of their collections or on the runway. Check out Tim Gunn, who demonstrates how to be classy and fur-free at the same time. The world is growing more compassionate and more outraged by the continuing atrocities of the fur industry. A recent demonstration in France, for example, drew hundreds of protestors. And thanks to the efforts of PETA’s Asia-Pacific affiliate, the word is spreading, even in China. Sun Li, a bright and shining star in her home country of China, is speaking out against the fur industry.

Together, we can help stop these atrocities. Please get involved, and let’s create a brighter future for these abused animals.

Please, please on behalf of the dogs of China and the world, stop this horrific practice. Just because something has been a tradition, it does not make it right or good. Cruelty, perpetuated in the open or in secret, always damages the world.

With so many alternatives for clothing in the world there is no need to promote unspeakable suffering of living creatures. Please think about this deeply for a moment, and then do what your heart tells you is right.

Makes me ashamed to be part of the “human” race. Animals are here to make the world a better place. They are not here for people to USE in every way that they’re sad small minds can dream up.

Can’t believe such horrible, devastatingly cruel and barbaric things still happen in this world to animals. What such human being could not have any feeling whatsoever for all creatures when cruelly murdering them like this?? I’ll never understand it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If we treated humans like this we would be called ANIMALS – how insulting to the animals in our world!!!!!!!

In this day and age, with the things we know and the knowledge we have why on earth are people still supporting the fur industury by buying fur???!! There is absolutely NO justification for it, fake fur is exactly the same but does not cause so much cruelty and suffering. China makes me sick and i will never visit there. If you wear fur you are supporting murder, end of.

Absolutely impossible to imagine how people could treat animals this way. We need to fight the fur trade and to let everyone know that “culture” is no excuse for providing or wearing fur, although some would try to make it one. China practiced infanticide also, but we would not let people get by with using that as an explanation for murder.

We, have the power to make changes. To educate. To fight on their behalf. We have to devote time every day of our lives to speak for them. To be the voice for the voiceless, the abused and the forgotten. :(

I don’t buy fur at all. I don’t want to assume the fur trim is fake, and mistakenly buy someone’s pet sewn into my jacket. When I tell people about what is happening, they don’t believe me because they believe our government and fashion designers wouldn’t allow this to happen. Our government doesn’t care about animals, since they allow our slaughterhouse animals to be skinned alive. And fashion designers save money since its cheaper to kill an animal, than to manufacture fake fur. Consumers actually believe fake fur means fake fur. Until laws are put into place to protect animals and naive consumers, all fur, fake or real, should not be imported from China.

    Dianne says...

The Chinese reputation for cruel barbaric practices and exploitation of animals is one of the worst – we need to shame them or something they understand – boycott the other crap they ship to other countries so they’re pressured in a way that they get it – because they don’t care if they kill the last whale because or anything else that moves because they are greedy and exploitative – why are they standing there laughing with glee as they inflict such hideous torture. No Chinese sub-standard import crap will be bought by me if it in any way supports this barbaric ignorant economy. – Thank you PETA – you get it done!

    April 16th, 2010, 11:51 pm

This video is horrifying, and our government can stop this unspeakable cruelty from taking place by banning the importation of ALL fur products from China. The U.S. is complicit in every atrocity committed by the Chinese by importing their products. And I agree that this is one of the main reasons our economy is suffering. Nothing (or very little) is made in America anymore. But we can’t just sit on our rear ends waiting for things to change. We must organize and take action. Awareness is the first step toward change, and PETA has always been at the forefront of spreading awareness of horrors like these — but I can’t stop wondering why there aren’t more people rising up and SCREAMING at our “representatives” in government to DEMAND an end to practices like this. This is supposed to be a DEMOCRACY, and our votes are what make our voices heard. Unfortunately, there are far too many Americans who consider voting a “waste of time” — and they think their vote won’t make a difference anyway. It DOES and it ALWAYS WILL. We must be more involved with the political process to make change happen, because our politicians don’t give a s**t about anything except lining their pockets.

People are selling hundreds of dog pelts, coats, sweaters, trims and renaming the fur. IT HAS TO STOP!! The actions from these disgusting people from china and other hidden fur trade makes me feel so shameful to be called human, I cannot even bear to watch the whole video. If manufacturers cannot identify real or fake furs, then don’t use it at all, we have so many other alternatives. Whenever I come across anything that’s got the slightess bit of fur, I wouldn’t even consider it in case I’m being decieved. Fur trades should be banned altogether everywhere in the world.

Ever since I became vegan, three years ago, I not only don’t wear fur, but don’t wear anything that remotely resembles fur, either, because it reminds me of the real deal. I know about the terrible cruelty perpetuated in China to make “fake fur.” It’s no different than the terrible cruelty inflicted on other animals used in the fur trade, but it hits people harder because it’s dogs and cats. The only way to insure that your clothing is cruelty free is not to wear ANY kind of “fur”, real or “fake”, not to wear leather, or feathers or alligators and lizards. Even wool comes at a cruel price for the sheep, and silk kills the worms who make it. Sticking to cotton and synthetic fibers (NOT including synthetic “fur”) is the only way to go!

    April 21st, 2010, 6:20 pm

Don’t buy anything from China, no matter how convenient or cheap it is. ALWAYS check the labels of everything you buy. Otherwise you are strengthening a culture that has absolutely no feeling for the suffering of living beings. Money talks. Where you put your money has more power than pretty much most things you say or do. Spend your dollars only on things you want to support. Make comments to people if you see them with fur or pieces of fur. Ask them if they are animal lovers and if yes, tell them they should not be buying anything with fur, especially from China and tell them you can send them a video showing them why or they should look up the Chines fur trade on PETA or the internet (plenty of other references supporting PETA’s statements).

Buying cheap non-organic meat (if you must eat meat – even though nobody does to stay healthy) for example means you are spending money on yourself at the cost of atrocious animal suffering. There is no free lunch – just like you, animals need space and care in order not to suffer. They may be bred in large numbers, but in spite of the fact that they are bred for bulky bodies their brains and feelings are perfectly intact, they are individuals whether you like it or think about it or not, and they go nuts being confined in that way. Just like any creature does. What language do they have to speak in for you to understand – English? Spanish? The cheaper it is, the more they suffer. Space and care cost money. The less space and care they get, the cheaper it is for you. You are saving at the cost of someone else. There is no free lunch. Somebody is paying the price and if it’s not you it’s the animals. Do you really want to do that? If you save you can afford most things you need. If you can’t afford organic meat, eat more vegetables – it’s better for you anyway.

Give your extra money to PETA. If you have no goal in life and work for its own sake doesn’t thrill you to pieces, here’s a motivation: work on your career or your job so you’ll have more money to give to PETA. That’s what I do.

    sharon duffy says...

    April 21st, 2010, 6:30 pm

I would hope that anyone having any knowledge of this monstrous practice would be unable to shut their eyes, close their minds, and pretend that everything is just fine in ‘their’ world. That there are individuals in the human species that are capable of such horrendous acts, sadly does not surprise me, What does surprise and upsets me is that everyone else hasn’t done everything they can to stop it. This feels like an insane ride that is spinning to fast to get off. Possibly this is a start in the right direction to end the unspeakable suffering, at our hands, of all living beings. I want to believe in the possibility.

    Sandy says...

    April 21st, 2010, 6:31 pm

And yes, everyone involved in the fur trade, either paying for the skinning or doing it, or involved in breeding and ‘storing’ the animals prior to skinning, as well as any sick individual purchasing fur, should have their skin ripped off their bodies exactly in the way these animals do. These ‘people’ do not deserve to take up space on the planet or use any of its resources. It makes me angry when people say “humans first”. What is a human? These monsters are human. Should they be treated as more valuable than the poor creatures they are brutalizing? Most animals are more noble than these sadists. There should be no line distinguishing animals and humans in our culture. History has proven that there are tons of people who deserve not a shred of respect. On the other hand, I can’t think of any non-human animal who doesn’t deserve my respect.

    Alan Braganza says...

    April 22nd, 2010, 1:03 am

All animals do feel levels of pain and especially the higher order mammals. When we graze our shins, knees and elbows on concrete, the feeling is painful as our nociceptors attest. Pain is felt most definitely by the dogs and cats as well as other mammals being stepped on, struck with metal rods, kicked/crushed with ruptured organs, skinned alive and mutilated alive by workers who focus on the end result without considering the horrific means however brutal and inhumane. It is a clear lack of respect for the dignity of animal life in most part. The fur bearing animals are considered commodities in these cultures and hopefully this will change soon. There is however, an ignorance with disregard about the pain these animals experience and in all cases, an arguable lack of sympathy and disregard for the feelings and sensitivity of living mammals because of a determination to harvest fur and reap the monetary reward with speed/efficiency.

The target markets and import/export trade industries must be addressed, kindly educated to stop and the workers must be responsibly educated to find much more humane employment. I am hopeful that they will someday; PLEASE LET IT BE SOON.

These industries have counterparts in first world countries and the demand for such products is truly shameful and unforgivable, let alone difficult to see the video footage and believe this happens in 2010. As it is Earth Day today, April 22, 2010 I can say with certainty that first, all human beings must save these animals and protect these animals from such treatment; second, spay/neuter these animals to reduce population; and third, BE AWARE OF ALL COMMODITIES YOU CHOOSE TO PURCHASE BECAUSE BEHIND EVERY PRODUCT THERE IS A LEGACY OF HOW IT BEGAN/AT WHAT COST/DETRIMENT, A SUPPORTIVE CULTURE AND A HISTORY OF SUCH TRADITIONS.

I traveled to China in 1979, when Nixon opened the gates of communism to the world. I was a vegetarian back then. There were no cats or dogs to be seen throughout the whole country. I couldn’t imagine why, until – during one of the dinners, a strange dish was served. If I couldn’t recognize it as a vegetable I wouldn’t eat it. Everyone was wolfing down this delicious meal, until someone finally inquired what it was. The translator indicated “dog”. Even back then. Most people were revolted & became immediately sick. A few, didn’t care. I was very happy I was a vegetarian. In a country so impoverished, animals were unsafe. I’m surprised with the development of this nation over the past 20 years, that this inhumane practice still exists.

We as humans are the custodians of our earth and the animals that live here. Since time began, humans in general have considered animals nothing more than objects, to be used in any way they choose to use them. No thought is taken for their feelings, because they do not understand that they are living beings who experience emotions and physical sensations. Beings like us, that thrive on love, understanding and nurturing. Without established morals and ethics, individuals and societies go mad for the need and lust of money and status (furs). This is why strictly enforced laws need to be established for the entire world, China included, by people who understand this. It is a crime to kill, and that needs to cover animals too. Strict enforcement is mandatory.

When I first heard of what the Chinese are doing in the name of their fur trade I actually did not believe it. I could not believe that people would keep animals in this disgusting manner and then SKIN THEM ALIVE. I thought the Chinese had come out of the stone age by now but I guess not. Of course we are talking about a society that makes women abort their children. I have not one ounce of respect for this country, it’s leaders or it’s citizens. I would think they would cease their inhumane-the word doesn’t even describe what they do-practices to gain some respect from the civilized people in the rest of the world.

I thought Socialists and Communists were required to respect the sanctity of life. They mourn about oppressive governments and the oppression of the masses… Well they are doing the oppression! They are not fit to become a world power (on the skinned backs of those they are brutalizing). I sent a rather harsh post to there consulate through another website recently on this very matter.

Perhaps after viewing the video, you will join me in my own personal pledge – to buy NOTHING from China until these horrific practices are stopped. There can be no doubt that if enough people around the world were to boycott Chinese products, government and industrialists in that country would take swift action to put an end to this hideous cruelty. Otherwise maybe skinning a few of the fur farm owners alive would do the trick.

    ..I, um.
    I feel really ill.
I knew about awful things that happen to animals in China (and in Jakarta. I really wish I could grab some PETA people, machine guns, and go at it in Jakarta). But that. that’s just..
…if that video doesn’t send you into shock, or at least make you feel queasy… there’s something wrong.

They do not behave like humans. Why do they kill them so mercilessly.. People have to sell meat for a living, but not everyone bash the skulls out or skin them alive, ‘least they could do was kill them mercifully. They have no respect for any life but their own. A healthy dose of fear is necessary for them i think, I hope these people who are doing it will suffer, not die, but yeah skinning them alive is a good idea. N i would be happy to do it myself. These monsters dont spare any living thing , be it beautiful tigers(apparently tiger flesh is used in medicine, n here i was thinking the dark ages have passed), dolphins(for dolphin meat) n now foxes, dogs , cats..the list is endless. I hope everyone who sees these are writing letters to the ambassador there and whatever else it takes to make it stop.. we cant sit here and let this happen. It is their world too.

I am absolutely sickened to my stomach by this and all the things that we do to animals and sometimes to each other. But this skinning business is with me day and night. I have problems sleeping. I am very empathic and I can feel the fear and anguish those poor animals are going through. I can’t however even start to begin what paid they are going through. Anybody ever ripped a bit of skin and remember how much that hurt, now imagine somebody ripping it all off after you have been crammed in a transport without room to breath, you have to relieve yourself on other fellow beings, no food no water being taken away from your loving home in some cases. I think if we pull together and rather then answering one of those chain mails promising good luck if you forward them and bad luck if you do, why not start a chain to all of your friends via e-mail and facebook and send some information about this terrible trade by the Chineese and hit them where it hits them the hardest. Lets boykott all Chineese products we would have normally bought. Look were the food or any other item is made and put it back if it says “Made in China” If we keep this going for a year and the chain is spreading, it will have an impact on them. Believe in the power of getting active like that. We made them a powerful nation by buying their products, we can put them back on the bottom by not buying their products. Please please help! Lets start now and see where we are next year. Everyday, every hour more animals are getting tortured and skinned alive. Tell people who wear real fur on their boots, on their scarf as a bag that they are supporting this cruel slaughter. The only other thing would be continue dreaming of going there and doing to those people what they are doing to the animals (but the Dexters or superheros who punish the bad guys only exist in movies).

Please help stop this barbaric act towards All animals. Please stop this cruelty for blood stained money, do not think if you choose to ignore this that this cruelty will ‘go away’ or if you don’t think about it it’s not really happening day in day out because it is and when puppies are old enough to live without mothers milk the dog is skinned and the puppies will follow particularly German Shepherds but any dog or cat will do.PLEASE STOP NOW.

There is only one way to hurt the Chinese and that is a total ban on contract or license manufacturing from the west and a total economic and commercial boycott on ANYTHING which is manufactured in China for the Western markets…. I will endeavour NEVER to buy another item of anything labelled ” Made in China ” and I will not support any business who sells their products.. Start manufacturing in your own country and provide work for your own people,,, NOT for the Chinese dog killers!!!! NO MORE,, NO MORE,, NO MORE !!!!!!

People like you and i need to literally do something to help these animals. We have a voice and were expressing it but to what extent..? Is this really making a difference.? We need to put our words into actions this trade need to be stopped and we need to devise plans on how to do this. Take action and really start to do something. This is the most dusting fact about human beings and its is so disturbingly cruel. Were all just sitting here and who actually is helping..??? i want to become an active member in the actions in place in stopping this cruelty i want to do something to stop this trade. How do i contact someone who will help me do so..? I will not sit by and watch this unfold any longer.

I am crying every day since I’ve watched this horror cause I’ve never realized that such freaks do exist in the world..so sick people who slaughter in the cruelest possible way these innocent, poor animals..for profit, fun, food or whatever. Cause there is just no excuse for this! It is a desperate, mad world.I am born on Christmas Eve, but I am afraid that there is no hope.. or that there is no too much left.. I bought a beautiful calendar of ” Animal Rescue Sofia” and it is called” Farm 2015″.Well it should be called ‘Farm 2215″if…Mankind still exist! I hope not or if it does…it should be quite in progress!! THANKS to all of us who support the nature and the animals!!Thank you!!

I wonder if your fur garment came lined with a full photo recap of how it was raised, treated, and created -would one think them so amazingly more beautiful that they could accept the guilt and accountability of their selfish pursuit of attention. If it were your dog, cat or neighboring wildlife – would you want to see it on another’s body? We have grown since the stone age where fur was a gift for use to harvest if we were skilled enough to capture it. We also made use of the total gift of the sacrifice of it’s life, but today we have the means to create amazing faux impressions of their God given design and should not need to raise, trap, hunt or even abduct fur created beings for survival. Not purchasing it is only one way to support the voice of the voiceless – having the strength to educate those who have shielded their minds from the reality of what their fur fashion really displays to those who support a furless future-is another very powerful support. One normally would not wear fur for negative attention but if delivered may a least give them something more to think about in their future. Even though I have vintage furs only -their future plan is for them to be buried and not recycled. They will not be making any future fashion statements in my wardrobe nor another. Call that a wasteful display of a message? I say it is a support move to my commitment to my own enlightenment. I as well will support any petition to ban the sale and due to the reports of China’s practices in the harvesting of fur from unethical practices will do my best to ban my support in any product that they create which means reading labels and research homework. (thank God for the internet library). China’s products might be cheaper but the costs that support their budget abilities come with too high price for my moral and ethical ability to accept. As disappointed as I am with my own lack of knowledge of my own blinders of reality – I want to send a sincere THANK YOU to those who have posted information that enlightened a path that is in harmony with my soul. God bless the beasts and the children for they are the spirits we need to be guided by.
