Back in the 80's I was vacationing in Hawaii. While stopping at a roadside stand that sold shells we saw a very young cat limping. I am a Chiropractor and automatically analyzed the gait. The young cat was lean and did not appear to belong to anyone. It approached me and allowed me to handle it. To shorten the story, I set it's pelvis in place and it scampered off. Later I saw it walking normally. It seems we were both in the right place at the right time.

I have spent my entire life saving stray animals of all sorts. Sometimes I have to give up things myself to provide for them.I have slowed down lately because of my health. I have trouble tending to them.

I was visiting my husband's family in Trinidad in 2002 and was struck by the countless number of stray dogs that were literally starving before our eyes. There were emaciated pregnant and nursing dogs and their mates fighting practially to the death other starving dogs for food. We spent the majority of our money the week that we were there feeding and watering the dogs we came across which were many. Dogs in Trinidad are almost soley kept as guard dogs only- chained to their front porch/door and are not walked or played with. Leaving the dogs when our trip was over was heart wrenching and we did our best with the people we met to educate them about spaying and neutering their animals and recognizing that they are feeling animals that appreciate being treated kindly. Cooked some great vegan meals while we were there too!

I guess it wasn't really a vacation, but my boyfriend was working out of town when he came across a kitten with its paw stuck in a pile of bricks. It seemed to be in alot of pain and very afriad, so he went to help the little guy. As he headed t…owards her, he noticed 3 more kittens running wild. They were ferrel, but he managed to catch them all (some took quite a chase!), including the trapped one. After confirming that they had no home with the neighboring houses, he called me and told me he was bringing them home. I immediately prepared a place for them away from my own cat and placed an ad on craigslist.org to find homes. Between me and my dog Bentley (who loves little critters), we tamed the wild babies (about 7wks old), and found them all wonderful homes. It was a tearful goodbye, but a deed well done. I still keep the pics for myself

I was on vacation with my family and we spotted a small dog chained to a tree in a park. There was no one around who claimed the dog so I insisted my family continue with our plans for the day while I stayed and waited for the owner to come back and claim the pet as their. Eventually someone did come to claim this sweet animal and I kindly informed the pet owner of the reasons why you should never leave your pet alone withou any supervision and especially without any food or water. Knowing that I stayed with this wonderful animal to ensure its safety made up for the fact that I missed out on family plans.

While on vacation in St. Martin. We were on this beautiful beach when a skinny old dog came up to us. We thought that he belonged to someone on the beach. But after he spent the whole day with us, we figured out that he was a stray. We had been feeding him and giving him water all day. When it came time to go back to town, still no owner. So we packed him into the rental car and took him to town with us. We found the islands animal control center. He was a missing pet and the owner had been frantic. We called the next day and the poor little guy had been returned to a very grateful owner.

My husband and I were camping at a nearby campground just one month before our wedding. As we walked the trails and then back to our site, he said "We need a Dog." The next afternoon, a little girl came around to our site asking us if we wanted to buy a puppy. "She's only $50. Everyone needs a home." The girl, no older than 6 years old had stolen our hearts and this puppy she held was so peaceful and adorable in her arms. We looked at each other and agreed. We kept her warm by the fire that night, packed up early the next morning and got her settled in her new home. Our honeymoon was a cross-country road-trip to Cape Breton and in with our stuff – in the backseat – enjoying the entire ride was our dog "Chance".

My rescue story is while on a Staycation at home due to the economy. Last winter was a brutal and long snowy one where I live. There have been a lot a displaced rabbits due to construction in my neighborhood. One likes to hang around my yard and nibble. Last winter the snow was so deep there was a time when nibbling was almost impossible so I helped out with some carrots and romaine. He liked it a lot and even brought over a friend. They pay me back nicely with the wonderful "organic" bunny fertilizer that gives me a super healthy lawn. So this isn't a super fantastic rescue but it rewarded my this summer when a brand new bunny made an appearance in my yard!

My family and I were on vacation and saw a blue heron on shore of a lake…I told my husband there was something wrong wit him and we got closer and saw that he had a fishing lure stuck in his neck. We tried to take it out and couldn't. So we took he to our local bird santuary where they fixed him up.

We were in Pompeii and there was a sad looking dog crying on a street corner. We went over to him and petted him and gave him some water out of a cup. My son went store to store asking if anyone knew who the dog belonged too. Finally we hit the jackpot and found the owner!

Visiting my brother in Quito Ecuador, a big white friendly bull dog had a ugly, draining , stinking sore on the top of his head that the dog got from dog fight. My brother was treating him unsuccessfully for maggots. My sister- in-law found him starving at the grocery store and the dog followed her home. My brother and his wife felt sorry for him and brought him on to their large walled in property. His name became Lucas. After helping my brother try to treat Lucas smelly head wound and thinking the maggots would clear up his infection, one morning I saw him rolling in the grass and crying and holding his paws to his head.I told my brother since he took the dog in and five other poor abandon dogs, I'll take the dog to the vet for professional treatment since their did not seem to be any improvement in Lucas's wound. My brother's children call him the humane society as their is no humane society. I took the dog to a professional vet for treatment , the vet pulled about 60 magnets out of his wound gave him an antibiotic and today my brother said Lucas is a happy dog.I was happy too bill $21.00

My family and I were on a vaction in Florida this summer, coming back to the hotel from a gorgeous beach on the first day of our trip, when we decided to pull off the freeway to avoid a traffic situation. While on the off ramp I spotted a tiny calico kitten sitting barely off of the road just licking its paws. I insisted that we pulled over, and I got out and carefully saved the kitten. When I picked it up, it was skin and bones! It's fur was very dirty and you could easily tell this poor little baby had been on its own for a while. Since it was a weekend there were no rescue shelters open and we decided to care for the kitten. She spent the week hanging out with us in our room and sleeping on towels in the bath tub. By the time the week was over she was strong, playful, gaining some weight and her coat was in a much healthier condition. Since it was so young, the vet said it wouldn't be able to go on the plane and come home with us, but she helped us find a no kill shelter that would take amazing care of our kitty and find it a nice home! My family gave up a whole week of Disney Theme Parks, amazing beaches, awesome entertainment to save this kitten, but the vet said that the kitty wouldn't have made it more than a few more hours on its own! And besides we got amazing memories with an beautiful calico kitty!

While on vacation in the Dominican Republic, I fell in love with Shakira, Ricky Martin, J-Lo and the gang. I spent a part of each day to make sure that the puppies and parents had water and food. There were security around the buffet area but I didn't really care and each day loaded my plates a few times over with the foods that they liked. I was told by the locals that they loved chicken! I also got bottles upon bottles of water to hydrate the poor dogs. There was one that was very sick and had gotten that way after giving birth to the puppies so I tried to take extra care of her. I was so happy when I found out that another couple had gotten Ricky Martin cleared by a vet and were taking him home to the US!
